I. 1820-1850
America’s Growing Pains

(Othello & Macbeth)
Without a cultural tradition of their own, Americans turned to Shakespeare to make sense of their world — finding insights into their chaos, and justification for their own behavior.
MONDAY | OCTOBER 10 | 1:00 - 2:30 PM
Presented by:
Gloria Moldow

2. 1880-1900
Cultural Assimilation & Xenophobia

(King Lear & The Tempest)
These plays provided both balm for immigrants cast adrift from traditional mores and vindication for xenophobic
legislators closing doors to entry.

Presented by:
Gloria Moldow

3. 1948
Marriage

(Taming of the Shrew)
Petruchio declares Katherine “his chattel, his goods...my ox, my ass, my anything.” Theatre-goers were troubled by these words, so a musical version of “Kiss Me Kate” opens on Broadway.

4. 1998

In the Hollywood film Shakespeare in Love, the young, fictionalized Shakespeare—actor and writer—struggles to write one of his
greatest tragedies.
