The Susi Q & Lyric Opera of O.C. "The Yellow Wallpaper"

Presented by Lyric Opera OC (LOOC)

Doors Open at 3:15 p.m. for light refreshments.

Laguna Beach, CA — Lyric Opera OC is thrilled to present a concert performance of The Yellow Wallpaper, the haunting and lyrical new opera by composer Brooke deRosa, at Suzi Q Senior Center in Laguna Beach. This marks the first performance of the opera since its world premiere at Carnegie Hall on January 31, 2025. The company is planning its first fully staged performance in fall of 2025.

Commissioned by Lyric Opera OC, The Yellow Wallpaper is based on the seminal 1892 novella by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The libretto, written by LOOC’s founder Diana Farrell, explores the psychological unraveling of its protagonist, Jane, a woman confined and gravely misunderstood in her postpartum care during the American Gilded Age. Farrell will also take on the leading role in this special performance.

"It's a wonderful chance to show our friends at Suzi Q what we're doing outside of the traditional operatic canon," says Michael O’Halloran, General Director of Lyric Opera OC. "We're also excited to demonstrate just how lyrical, dramatic, but tuneful and catchy new music can be. It gets a bad rap, but modern opera shares so much with the storytelling of Broadway that it's hard to turn your nose up at it." O'Halloran sings the role of John, Jane's physician husband. The composer will also be present, singing the role of Jenney, the chambermaid. Carl Pantle returns as musical director.

With sweeping melodies and a gripping narrative, The Yellow Wallpaper brings a fresh, yet deeply emotional experience to audiences. Lyric Opera OC is proud to share this powerful work and reaffirm its commitment to bringing innovative opera to diverse audiences.
